The Rodeo and some Central Precinct Info
Wow, the bike rodeo held at Bridlemile last Saturday was AWESOME! Approximately 60 kids were there, joined by lots of parents and volunteers. The SWNI Crime Prevention Committee did a fantastic job planning this event months ago, and it was a pleasure to be part of it. I brought Officer Andrew Caspar, district officer for the 890 area (or deep SW Portland), as he is a certified bicycle mechanic and police bicycle instructor. This event has to be one of the highlights in my Neighborhood Response Team (NRT Officer) career, right up there with National Night Out. Sylvia, Nancy, Marsha, Leanne, Stephanie, Jan, all who donated their valable time on a perfect Saturday and all the safe bikers out there, THANK YOU!!!!!!!
OK, now the info part:
As some of you may know, Central Precinct is about to include the SE side of the Willamette River, over to SE 39th Ave, from I-84 to the North and the City of Milwaukie to the South. SE Precinct will be divided among Central and East Precincts. Central is alive with activity! Officers, Sargents, Lieutenants, our new Captain Kruger and Commander Reese are working non stop to make the transition as seamless as possible to our service areas. This move is in response to the current economic conditions and is a cost saving measure to prevent the potential laying off of police officers.
We have started a test at Central Precinct using the social networking site Twitter. This site presents the unique ability to network real time info instantaneously to whomever chooses to receive it. We believe it to be a valuable way for the police department to connect to the citizens we serve every day in a timely manner, with the hopes that it furthers our community policing mission.
Although a bit of a buzz word these days, "Twitter" is essentially an informational exchange using technologies readily available to a broad spectrum of the citizens residing within our service area. At its base, this includes email, text messaging and internet information. I realize that this informational exchange is not a catch all for the release of information and will continue to update the citizens of SW Portland with current crime trends and major incidents via the Public Information Office, Neighborhood Response Team Officers (NRT), Neighborhood Liason Officers (NLO), Southwest Neighborhoods Incorporated (SWNI) and neighborhood meetings.
For those that choose to subscribe to Twitter, the "trial" community policing twitter for the Portland Police Bureau can be found here: http://twitter.com/PPBCentralSW
If you set up your account and link your phone to the site, you can receive updates directly to your phone (140 characters or less) as I update the site. I will try to keep the updates to the point and short, especially as more SW Neighbors join. Right now, we are still testing, but already SE Neighbors are asking about it! If you choose to link your phone, make sure you have unlimited text messages on your plan. If not, just check the site from time to time.
Thanks Neighbors!
Brian Hughes, PPB NRT
