What's A Neighborhood Association?
Neighborhood Associations are the basic building block of democracy in the City of Portland. Participants actively work to increase the vibrancy, livability, sustainability, and democracy of their neighborhood. Neighborhood Associations belong to everyone!
About the Maplewood Neighborhood Association
The Maplewood Neighborhood Association can help you keep up to date on issues concerning life here in Maplewood. You can work with your neighbors on issues that directly concern you and let your views be known. Come meet your neighbors, and together we can make a difference!
Our Meetings
The Maplewood Neighborhood Association meets the second Monday of each month. Our Membership meeting begins at 7PM and we usually adjourn between 8 and 8:30PM. We meet in the Community Building behind the West Hills Friends Church, across the street from Maplewood School.
Our Board meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at the same location and time as our Membership meetings.
Please join us for either our Membership or our Board meeting. If you would like to have an item on the agenda please contact our Chair a week prior to the meeting. Otherwise, you can come to the meeting and bring up your ideas or concerns as new business at the end of the meeting.
Where We Are
Maplewood is a small neighborhood, located in the Southwest area of Portland, Oregon, and is surrounded by three other southwest Portland neighborhoods: Hayhurst to the north, Multnomah to the east, and Ashcreek directly south. The neighborhood boundaries are defined by SW Vermont Street, SW 45th Avenue, and SW Multnomah Boulevard. The western boundary of Maplewood is the Washington County line. Maplewood's topography is hilly with two tributaries of Fanno Creek: Vermont Creek and Woods Creek. Vermont Creek runs east to west in the northern portion of the neighborhood and Woods Creek runs east to west in the southwestern portion of the neighborhood.
The land bordered by SW Multnomah Blvd., SW Canby, SW 51st, and SW Custer is constrained by the steep slopes, flooded areas, and wetlands of Woods Creek. In the creek corridors there are numerous underground springs. There are no through streets which pass over the creek drainages so there are few north to south connections from most of Maplewood's streets to Multnomah Blvd. Likewise, there are only two ways to travel east to west and exit the neighborhood: Vermont Street and Maplewood Road.

April Hill Park Volunteers “Dig In” for Restoration Project
On October 28th, twelve volunteers from the Maplewood neighborhood came out to April Hill Park and began a new restoration project. Neighbors of the park covered 1,600 square feet of riparian area with layers of paper and woodchips and then fenced the project area with a cedar split-rail fence. The paper and woodchips will kill the existing grass and make room for native plants which will help to improve water quality in Woods Creek and create habitat for birds and other wildlife. A good time was had by all as volunteers balanced hard work with sipping hot cider and mingling with neighbors.
However, this is only the first step of the project so there is still time for you to become involved! Join us in April Hill Park on February 23rd from 9am-12pm to complete the project by planting a variety of native plants. All ages are welcome to help plant and all tools and training are provided.
For more information, send an email to aprilhillpark@maplewoodna.com or contact Marissa Dorais at (503) 823-7016 or marissa.dorais@bes.ci.portland.or.us.

Hope to see you on July 29th!Posted May 13, 2007 Hello all,The Second Annual Maplewood Neighborhood Summer Picnic planning is taking shape. Mark this date on your calendar Sunday, July 29 from 1 pm to 5. We will have a lot to celebrate. Maplewood School should have their new playground completed and the Maplewood neighborhood should have its decorative sign caps installed by then.We will again be laughing and dancing to the music of the “Usual Suspects. There will be lots of activities for kids including a slip and slide. Last year the fire department paid us a visit and cooled everyone down by spraying out their 500 gallon tank in the lower field. Since it was 103 degrees that day it was a big hit. Adults and kids alike ran to the field. Who knows maybe they’ll do a repeat this year.Another raffle is in the planning. Last year we had gift certificates to McMenamins and the Shilo Inn among the many items raffled. This year, if the board agrees, all proceeds from the raffle will go into a fund to make improvements to April Hill Park.Ice cream, lemonade and watermelon will be provided. We will really need some volunteer help to make this happen. If you can spare a couple of hours the day of the event to help set up shade tents or to hand out ice cream or lemonade, we’d like to hear from you. Additionally we will need walkers to distribute fliers announcing the picnic around the middle of July. These are a few examples of how you can help to make this picnic a success. This event is being planned to coincide with National Night Out events.Have a question or want to volunteer? Please call Anne-Marie Fischer at 503-452-4240 or e-mail me at amsfischer@comcast.net

Process for 2008 Elections
The Maplewood Neighborhood Association (MNA) Annual Membership Meeting & Elections will be held Monday, March 10, 2008, at West Hills Friends Church Classroom.
If you would like to run for a Maplewood NA Board position you can put your name on the Candidate List sheet, available at the sign-in table at the February meeting and at the sign-in table at the Annual March meeting as well before the elections are held.
When it's time to hold the elections at our March meeting we will ask if there are any nominations from the floor. Any discussion about election will also take place at that time.
Each office, with a list of names for each office, will be posted where they can be seen, and when you completed your ballot just place it in the box provided. We’ll tally the votes after all ballots are in and announce the result before the March meeting is adjourned.
We need a majority vote (a majority of those voting) to declare a winner. If we do not have a winner for any one position we will have a second vote for that position.
